When To Winterize Sprinklers In Colorado

The key to winterizing your sprinklers is to ensure that they are closed down for winter prior to the first freeze. Throughout the country that can mean a huge date range. In terms of Colorado though, the National Weather Service has given the following dates to help make your decision

  • October 21st is the average date in which Denver's normal overnight low temperature hits 32 degrees Fahrenheit for the first time.
That being said, you can check all the weather stats for the Denver, Colorado area. Here is the link to Denvers Weather / Cold Season Stats.

As a general rule usually anytime after the middle of October is the right time to take care of winterizing your sprinkler system. It is important to take care to properly winterize your sprinkler system.  If you do not take proper care of your system, you risk a costly repair come the spring. So, let's avoid that, shall we?

What Is Involved?

After draining your sprinkler lines, and shutting off the water, it is ideal is to have your system blown out utilizing a commercial-sized air compressor.  Most residential air compressors are not powerful enough to properly clear the sprinkler lines. These compressors are hooked up to the drain or the backflow preventer and air pushes water out through each sprinkler head. If not done properly the manifold and backflow could be damaged.

Once the system has been blown out it should not be turned on until the spring. During warm periods in the winter you can use a hose to water your lawn, as turning your system back on could cause your sprinkler lines to freeze, as well as other damage to your system, before the warmer season comes back.
